Midreshet Yerushalayim is a rapidly growing educational network under the academic aegis of the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies. The reasons that Midreshet Yerushalayim has struck such a positive accord among Jews from Eastern and Central Europe are intrinsic to its basic approach to Jewish education:
- The intellectually open, rigorous Masorti approach of Midreshet Yerushalayim is very effective in reaching out to the multitudes of educated, sophisticated individuals and families from the FSU. In Israel, our adult-education programs strengthen Jewish identity and knowledge, reinforcing the absorption of new immigrants into the Jewish state.
- The strong Zionist orientation of Midreshet Yerushalayim stresses aliya and the centrality of Israel in Jewish life, even as it strengthens Jewish identity in the FSU.
Midreshet Yerushalayim Programs In Israel
There are 27 weekly courses in Jewish studies, offered in Russian, attended by over 750 adults in 12 towns and cities around Israel. These courses, on Bible, Jewish History, Tradition and Land of Israel provide intellectual and spiritual reinforcement for the successful absorption of new Russian-speaking Israelis into the Jewish State.
The MILI program for young Russian adults has created a positive environment for young Russian-speaking immigrants in Israel, in which they connect to each other and to their Jewish heritage. MILI clubs provide a Jewish social framework for over 450 young people, who meet weekly in 14 clubs throughout Israel. They enrich their knowledge of Jewish heritage in a fun and intellectually stimulating atmosphere, competing in intellectual quiz games that include questions on Judaism and Jewish culture. National competitions around the themes of Jewish holidays take place three times a year and draw as many as 300-400 participants from around the country.
